Mediation

Mediation is a parent-designed, child-centered approach to determining custody and placement.

In Wisconsin, when parents disagree about custody and placement, the court will require them to make an effort to settle their differences in mediation. In the mediation session, the mediator facilitates the process, and each parent has an equal say in identifying issues, considering options, and making plans.

Most parents know better than court services or judges what is best for their children. Successful mediation depends upon the parents’ willingness to honestly address their disagreements and make peace. Because of this spirit of cooperation, with the help of a good mediator parents are often able to make decisions in their children’s best interest in only one session.
